A Morning Lament

I was going through some of my journals as I began packing things up for our upcoming move to OKC within the next few months. I came across this prayer that really is more like a lament. I wrote this on a quiet summer morning while sitting at the table in my backyard on June 22, 2019. In light of the pandemic that happened in 2020, it is almost eerie to read it now. It is as if something in my spirit new things would dramatically change; something that would cause men to pause and reflect on how they are living their lives.

This morning feels different. The air is heavy and thick; sad. The trees stand tall and strong yet they seem to be in mourning. Something is about to happen in our world that will change even the lives of these trees. It is as if they know their time is almost up to stand tall and proud; to give shade and seed and home to the animals. They will no longer stand majestic; protecting and producing. Instead they will be a calamity as their heavy branches come crashing to the ground in destruction and debris. Nests will plummet and lay waste. Rot will fill the air in place of bird song upon gentle breezes. Man has reached the doorstep of an evil that history has not yet recorded. A war cry is heard and tensions are high across every ocean. Our world waits in agony for the strike that begins the end of all we know of this earth we inhabit so disrespectfully. Arrogant, haters of God – Listen! Be somber and cry! Proud men will soon beg for mercy in the streets next to the same men they smugly drove past each morning near the underpass to the highway. God will leave the decision of mercy or death in the hands of those who have been stricken down, homeless wanderers will become judge. God will turn away and allow those who have lived in pride to be acquainted with torment. No one is exempt. Surviving these times will be by staying alert, keeping watch, continually crying out to God for mercy. Pray none will be deceived. For there will be too many distractions and evil illusions to veil the eyes of the earth. Only the light of God will be able to penetrate the darkness of the days to come. Darkness is as light only in the presence of God; in the protection of His hand. So today lift your eyes, lift your hands, fill your lamps with oil and sing praises to God our mighty fortress and protector! Soon He will come and show himself to the earth. All will acknowledge Him as creator, as the one and only God who is and has and will always sit on the eternal throne of glory! Finally, men will see – but pray now for eyes to be opened before eternity is sealed. No other tragedy has, can, or ever will compare to this end.

Father, unveil our eyes! Shake your church awake! Forgive me of my discontented heart! I know I am to always stay tethered to you just as Asaph in the Psalms.
